Been a year now?

Guess it's been an year or so since my last post.

Tried a bit of web development over the last year. Tried my hands on NodeJS, ASP.NET MVC etc etc.

Node + JS
While I really liked Node, JS part turned out to be a tricky little fuck!
I really love the simplicity of JS. But then there is the "this" pointer fuck-ups that keep happening x_x

ES6
Recently tried Traceur. Wanted to explore how the ES6 has changed the JS landscape. Welcome improvements, but to what end? Coming from C# background, LINQ lovers will love the new ES6 stuff. There's also better way to create classes, and don't forget - Futures and Promises, the Internet of 2014 Things.

But I really didn't like the way classes are gonna be implemented. Need to qualify every member variable / function with "this". WTF.. half of my class code will be "this". Fuck this, fuck that. Also, this context is lost as usual, and using ( ) => is the only way to fix the "this" context.

Heroku
Hosted my site on Heroku for a while. The command line upload, using Git and shit for deployment was fun. Not to forget, Heroku file system is case sensitive.

App Engine
Now my site resides in Google's AppEngine. They have a GUI to upload O_o
My site is static for now, cos I had no time to invest in Python frameworks.
Google is the new Microsoft - they won't support Dart in their own App Engine, and they call it the future (I know about the VMs.. they no free Senor). Also they fucked up Maps big time :P

C#, ASP.NET MVC
Yeah, all things Microsoft. Also Windows 10.
C# and it's Async / Await took the world by storm didn't it? C# 6 didn't raise a single eyebrow.
Guess others have caught up to C#, now the cycle repeats.
And MS's definition of Cross-Platform remains Windows 8 + Win Phone only.
Windows 7 dead already? Nope, and fuck you MS and your Air-Space Issues in WPF.
Waiting for .NET native though (I meant on all platforms)

C++11
That was nice. Being able to see it in action, in blogs and videos.
Clang is the only, truly, really complete implementation yet - like it or not.
And I gave up tryin to get Clang working with CLion
Also, Futures and Promises. Amazeballs right?
VS2013 has no fucking support to write u8"" strings, fuck this shit. It's 2014

Alright, enough of cynical shit. The good things...

Dart
Latest adventures. Pretty awesome language. Very very non-verbose. To the point language.
Very rare thing to come across. And I'm as of now, hooked.
Made a little game in Dart, check it out
Playing with ThreeJS & Dart for now

Unreal Engine 4
Best news of the year so far. And the entire source-code, for 20 bucks. Love those EPIC guys.
It was so so long since I saw those ugly MACROS in C++ X_x
My laptop though, hates it. Blueprints though, are really amazing.
UE4 is a step in the right direction from UDK.
But no scripting language :\

Rust
Rust is the most anticipated language for now. Like it or not. The syntax is again is lot less verbose for a native language. I've been dumping my learning on Github, Yeah you can read about pros and cons everywhere. The best part of Rust is the Reddit community. Fucking awesome, really nice people, best of devs.

HTML5
Videos play nice now don't they. Finally.
Most of the browsers now support HTML5 and WebGL (even IE! Woot!)

Microsoft
Ok, all things said and done, they have shown interest in open source software.
With Roslyn and Node tools (this was really cool)
Also MVC is open source now, & so is Typescript
Not to forget, Azure is becoming more cross platform than their SDKs

Azure is also very nice to work with (I mean nice like a fluffy cute bunny), but little expensive to begin with (fucking bunnies -_-)

Ok, so the following posts will mostly be about Dart & Rust I guess. Oooo.. and WebGL may be?

Language Trending

Was bored - thought I'll see how programming language are trending. Google Trends is a fun tool!

Fish-Bowl Theory of Universe

Heads up - I'm totally fucking drunk.. so don't read this if you're one of those crazy-always-serious piece of shit. Boozing alone in front of a god damned fish tank makes u think.. think a lot. So...

There's a fish tank (called Aquarium for all you glorified drama queens). I see 3 different species of fish.. all grouping themselves like they are some heavenly piece of shit. They are acting like they are too awesome to mingle with other cheap ass fishes... well little do they know - nobody gives a fuck about any of them.

I see two little fishes (looks like gold fishes). They seem happy playing around, one chasing the other all over the tank. Nice.. puts a smile on your face. But then there are grown ups - fucking morons. Looking at their own reflections and dancing and shit.. trying to make themselves feel better or something. From where I see - either they are completely engrossed in useless crap or they realize that life is just this - might as well enjoy it. Well.. who's a moron now?

Then there's an explorer fish. Doesn't seem to care about anyone else in the tank - does what it likes. Always swimming around the whole tank, like Indiana Jones trying to find treasure in remote parts of the tank. Probably is the coolest fish according to the ladies in the tank? Well from my point of view - all it succeeded in doing was picking out dust and shit from the floor. Full marks for trying though. Funny thing is - unless the guy who maintains the tank puts some 'treasure', it will never find anything. But what if he did? Well, all that hard work finally pays off eh?

There's another gold in the tank. It only dances when someone's close, like when they put their hand on the glass. I'm not even sure if it can see or sense this. But still, it's a different dance - almost like it's done to just to please the one who's looking. I was thinking, poor bastard thinks it'll get'll food if it pleases the all mighty on-looker. Then the bartender who came to refill my vodka tells me, "That's my favorite fish. I put extra food for it when it comes to the surface.". I asked him why and he says, "Cos it dances when it sees me." Well... fuck.

One last fish, the dark thingy with funny pattern just floating on the floor, doing nothing. It made a pretty good statement - "I don't give a fuck about anything." Pretty cool if you ask me.

Now in case you're wondering what the fuck this rant is all about - I'm just thinking.. what if this universe is just a fucking fish bowl to some higher existence? I'm not religious, neither an atheist, yet. I'm probably confused and I'm not offended by any of your view points. I don't intend to prove or disprove the existence of god. All I'm telling is - no matter how hard the fish tries, it'll still live and die in the tank (Well, except for Nemo 0_o).

What if the universe is just a lab experiment for someone? What if we are not even the 'fish' but just some microbes on the surface that nobody even gives a shit about? What if it's technologically impossible to to look or go outside the fish tank from the inside?

Two kinds of people

There are two kinds of people - People who like to play different games and people who like to play the same game in different ways - ME

Most Awesome Dream

I had the most awesome dream yesterday.

I'm in a passage.. a big one. It's sometime in the future.. way in to the future.
There are a few people in there.. strangers.. then there's also my dad.

He's wearing some sort of a sci-fi suit which I gave him (I don't know about me, it's always like FPS).
So I tell him lets start the simulation and we both start running around, jumping around, picking up weapons etc, shooting, etc

The ambiance is pretty nice. Super cool light beams, bloom effects and nice shadows and all those HDR type of scenes.

So after a while, I ask my dad, "So how was it?", to which he replies "Reminds me of the old days."
Then I go over to a corner and toggle a switch.

Guess what happens?

The shadows get turned off!

Then I tell to my dad, "The whole software to put the shadows for humans in the real world was developed by me."

A future where there are no more shadows and I simulate shadow for the world. O_o

All good things come to an end

End of line.

2012 was supposed to be the year when I broke in to the industry. Didn't happen.
I worked pretty fucking hard, but I guess it wasn't enough.
Lame end to a memorable journey.

I'm gonna dissect the journey in case some one like me ends up here and is in a dilemma.

Here's a quote from my 1st post -
Cons

I may end up failing - DONE
It feels miserable, no longer feel like Awesome-O. Haven't socialized in 2 or 3 years. It's tough for an introvert to start making new friends again... I hate humans anyway.

I may not get the same pay for another 5 years even if I end up being a web-developer. - Nope
Well, I should have listened to the free advice out there - don't quit your day job. Life turned upside down within 3 months. By the 4th month I started looking out for a job, found one in 6. I ended up working as a fresh graduate. If you are in such a situation then find a job that will help you in the future - I joined because of C++ / C# / Windows developer. To be honest, I learnt a lot, enjoyed the company of a few awesome coders.

Good thing I took the day job as a backup. I actually am getting (a lot more) more than what I expected.

But i have this gap of 6 months that I can't show any experience and to my bad luck, it falls in the "recession" time. HRs usually think I got fired.. more lameness...
Get ready to watch your friends / college room-mates earn like shit and get promoted while you still are 1 year lamer (if you are primarily in the midst of out-sourced no-talent people, then you will NOT get promoted because of performance - keep this in mind - only experience in years count)

I may end up losing everyone I love. [I'll still have myself though] - DONE
Yeah, I still love me O_o
I lost everyone else though, conceptually speaking.

Actually if I look back, I thought the toughest challenge in the worst-case would be to find a job. Totally wrong, turned out to be easiest. Toughest is realization of what you lost, what you trusted, what fooled you for so many years, whats gonna stick with you for the rest of your life..

Hard part for me was getting my life back together... Be warned - you'll lose a lot of people you love. But on the plus side, you just end up unit-testing people and fixing bugs in life.. so I'm kinda really glad it happened.  Trust me on this.

I may have to start all over again as a fresher - DONE
I did. But remember again - Don't fucking quit your day job. Find one that doesn't stress you out too much, has good work-culture and doesn't require too much commute time.

Pros

I may end up following my dream - Bah
You may end up watching your dream crumble and feel helpless... x_x
But sure feels good... \m/

So what am I going to do?
Well, I'll be just another software geek. But -
I'll still follow the industry.
I'll still be using Unity.
I'll probably watch the demise of XNA in the coming few years (sad, I know).
I'll still dream
I still hope that someday I'll make it - say 10 years from now? (O'Henry cliche)

To all my loyal 4 followers and a few more others - Adios. I wish you succeed in your pursuit of happiness.

This blog will contain mainly right-side-of-the-brain-related stuff from now on. Doesn't mean I'll stop coding... c'mon... I'll still post some stuffs for the kicks.

At this point, I would like to sincerely thank -
XNA Creator's Club - It started here. I learnt "real" programming here.

Unity 3D - Most non-evil corporate entity I've ever seen (please remain like this)

Team behind X-Files, Fringe, Battlestar Galactica - Few things that have made me dream even more.

Right, now to see if there are indie / free licenses for artistic programs out there...  I get bored you know.

NTFS: Lengthiest blog post x_x

Teleport Rush - On Kongregate

My 1st Game on Kongregate!

Well, I've kinda reached coder's block. Teleport Rush didn't seem to be progressing a lot these days, so I decided to see the reception on Kongregate.

You can check it out here.

It's frakking tiring to come home after 9 hrs of work and 3 hrs of travel and do some game dev... sucks... wish there was someone to design tracks & environment, and I could just code... Also wish that someone was a cute chick X_x

Google vs AD BLOCK PLUS

Up until last week, users could disable Ads inside GMAIL using ABP. Google now linked chat textbox to the ads - user's can't practically chat without turning off ABP on mail.google.com! Genius strategy huh?

I tried getting that damn textarea to become editable again.. but no luck.. screw you firebug x_X

Let the Ads in... Bow in defeat

India Game Developer Summit 2010 - Carl Jones / Crytek

You're probably wondering why I'm posting this in 2011. Well, I just came to know that Crytek released their SDK.

I came across the name Carl Jones, which triggered a flash-back.. I've met this guy!!! Yes, the guy who gave a press release about Crytek SDK - I've met him and talked to him personally.. Whoo Whooo \m/

It was sometime in Feb 2010, he had come down to India to launch the "India Game Developer Summit 2010". Damn, good old times - I had quit my job to pursue game development when this happened. So much for the  Indie Dreams.. x_x

Anyway, I was so eager that I was almost the 1st to reach there...

(see, Carl still connecting his Laptop and just some people fixing the stage and stuff)

It was actually an awesome presentation... more than what I hoped for

I kinda recalled the essence of what he said (all hail my photographic memory \m/).

What your game should offer -

1. When you develop a game or an engine, list down 10 important features that others are offering (kinda industry standard). Your game should support all these 10 features to compete with them.

2. Of these 10, filter out 3 features that you think are the most important. Your game should should set a new standard for these

He also mentioned how they work at Crytek -

Anything difficult takes 2 days to implement, and anything impossible takes a week.

Ah anyway, after the session and stuff I went and spoke to him - (Whooo whooo again \m/)
I had asked him, "Epic made their Unreal engine available to Indies, what about you guys?" to which he replied they had plans to release the SDK for non-commercial use sometime soon, may be by the end of 2010.

Well, the time has come.. and I knew it an year before.. muhahahaha.. that's the only reason I'm posting this o_O

Wonder if I'll ever get a chance to meet Carmack x_x

Clint, a 6 year old Genius

Reader's Digest published this photo on their last page, don't recall when.

Can't help but wonder, how "pure" his art would have been!

Google Maps Watermark - Duh!

Fringe + Fringe + Fringe + Coffee + Coffee + Coffee + F... = Very Sensitive Eyes.

I was checking out some terrains near my home in Google Maps.

Somehow thought it'll be fun to find out all the water-marks, you know... OK you may not...

Anyway, every tile has a watermark... non-jagged arrays and I'm still bored

True Engineering

I came across this hack-a-day post. It's about how Rice University students rigged Wii Boards to help kids with disability learn to walk.

From their website:

"By cleverly linking five Wii Balance Boards, a team of Rice University undergraduates has combined the appeal of a video game with the utility of a computerized motion-tracking system that can enhance the progress of patients at Shriners Hospital for Children-Houston.

The Rice engineering students created the new device using components of the popular Nintendo game system to create a balance training system. What the kids may see as a fun video game is really a sophisticated way to help them advance their skills. The Wii Balance Boards lined up between handrails will encourage patients age 6 to 18 to practice their balance skills in an electronic gaming environment. The active handrails, which provide feedback on how heavily patients depend on their arms, are a unique feature.

Many of the children targeted for this project have cerebral palsy, spina bifida or amputations. Using the relatively inexpensive game console components improves the potential of this system to become a cost-effective addition to physical therapy departments in the future."

Check out  this video on Youtube:

How sweet is this? Come to think of it.. We.. thats right.. You too (95% probability  - 80% that XNA, Game or Actionscript got you here and 15% that you are a known friend ) as engineering grads forgot all about making lives better and sadly, everything after college life is about "Money"

Switching to Story Telling!

Ok I've started using "public" transport. I can't sketch anymore during my travelling time - people stare at me like I'm a pervert or something.

Now that my imagination needs a new IO sub-system, I'm gonna start writing short stories.

Best part is I don't even have to write down anything, power to recall "dreams".. Muhahaha!

Panic Attack

[Read like a mysterious narration, Max-Payne style if you'd prefer]

I was surfing the web. It was around 3 AM. I had a bunch of apps running. Flash-Develop was open. Visual Studio was hiding in the back, sleeping like a little baby. Chrome was trying to show me some code while FF was busy downloading. All nice n quiet. A little too quiet…

Suddenly, my system stops responding. Just like that! Clank!

Must have been some updates - I lean back and hope that it starts responding. I wait like a predator, I click when the time is right… But it's one of those days where the prey doesn't show up.

I right click on my desktop. A menu opens up - I click, nothing happens. Ah, it’s happening again. I open the task-manager somehow. An achievement in itself - I still got it…

It was cold, I was suspicious...

I glance at all the processes. FF has triggered some plugin-container.exe. Uses memory, releases mem… Ahh! Cmon.. Make up your mind you lil piece of worthless javascript.

I couldn’t find anything that looks like malware. It’s getting late, my eyes are dreamy. I remember those good old days - when Win32 parite had screwed up my system. It took me a while to recover from that. But I couldn't let that happen again… Part of life is to not make the same mistake more than thrice…

I never have Anti-virus installed; I've always been the madcap-RAM-preserver-for-some-later-use type. So it’s gonna be all manual…  Just like the ol’ times.

I run Regedit - surprisingly it comes up. I was shell-shocked! I thought to myself, why didn’t they disable this thing, what are they up to? They don't want me to suspect… very nice... finally a challenge.

I sit there in the corner, feeling dizzy. Its 4 in the morning, I hear crows. Must be the ol' ones who need to pee... Sheesh. I close the windows. Dead-silence, I like it.

I enter the kitchen, make some coffee… really strong. The caffeine wakes me up. I sit there sipping, thinking what to do next - no clue. It suddenly occurs to me… the last resort.

I put in my Backtrack Live distro – Reboot; too much text. Damn, I hope to find some bad ass code in my C drive. Could this be the stuxnet? Nah... The Linux boots up, nice dragon I think to myself. I click on the Shell icon...Nothing happens. What the hell! It's then I realize.... R.I.P Mouse.

All this pain and panic - for nothing. If only, never mind and I doze off… Cometh the sweet dreams.

My mouse, with wings - like an Angel. She calls out to me. She brings up images of those nice things we clicked together. All the emoticons - the good times. All those dumb message boxes. There was too much history. I couldn't bear it. I woke up. Must get over it…

I wait till its noon. The Sun is vertical, shadow of the eagles blind me... so does the shadow of the crows... pigeons... you get the point. I lead my life as I want to. I defined it when I was a kid. I re-defined it my teens. I re-re-defined when I completed my college. All those re-definitions… nothing in common, except - I am the GOD of laziness. So I had to stick to it... Self respect.

I look outside the window, I see a shop. They sell mouse, whole bunch of em. Hanging there… One of those could be mine. I check my wallet, I have the cash. But should I go? No... Self-respect. Can’t afford to walk…

I ping my partner in crime. Poor guy, was sick. Somehow he pings back. I ask him to get me a mouse and come to my house. I know he's sick. But who cares. He agrees, probably had a .32 up and ready for me. I sit there, lean back… So I'm gonna get a new mouse, in less than 2 hours. All I have to do is wait, but can I? Nah, too lazy to wait... Self-respect.

I press the Win button on keyboard, I see a blue thing. It reads control panel. I see mouse settings... My angel... Hang on I'm coming.

I change the settings - to Left-handed. I right-click, and it left-clicks... Sweeet. My mouse is back, with just one wing left. But that'll do. I ping my friend and ask him to back-off. Nobody takes my angel away from me.

I learnt my lesson that day, Self respect. Stick with that one thing that defines you... defines who you really are.

Lost

I wrote this sometime ago, found it when cleaning my hard-disk.

Life came to a standstill, least when I expected it to.
I closed my eyes to take a break, and the world around me came crashing down.
I trusted the ones I loved, with a hope that they would be there.
But hope died, and all alone in the corner - all through the night I stared,
At the gray walls in the moon light, I was too afraid.

I no longer knew who I was, what I wanted to do.
All the plans and dreams I made, botched up and blown.
Soul was burnt and torched, but no one seemed to care.
Is that all I was – In the sands of time, just another grain?
My defense mechanism kicked in – trying to erase memories
It tried so hard, suddenly my entire life flashed back in vain
In vain, because all it made me think was,
Life has changed so drastically - Where the fuck is my time-machine?

When I was a kid, all I did was wait for Sundays to watch Batman and Duck-tales.
Now life in an eternal wait, I’m the localhost, I’m the browser, all I wait for is Me.
I ping and I ping, and no response, I don’t even bother to respond to Me.

Life was simpler back then, PKUNZIP and you could play a game,
Cheat codes were simpler, all it required was one param – megahit.
But now, either your graphics card sucks or the RAM, so says the game,
Nothing is enough, it never will be, not even OllyDbg or the Resource hacker kit.

Life was easy to win, villains were simpler –
They were dumb and told their plans before we could see.
One Octopus missile and Dark-Kat was would be long gone,
One Kame-hame-ha and Frieza was history.
Now they catch you inside your dream inside your dream, inside your dream,
Or it’s a Green Orb - no one can resist the lustful beam,
And I’m left here waiting for my Tarakian to save me.

Life was colorful - I came back from school and picked up my crayons.
Life is colorless - I come back from work and pick up the cigarettes.
What the hell do you color, when there is no canvas?
Which color do you use, when everything is dark in sadness?

It was then I recalled – Anakin turning to the Dark Side.
May be some people are destined to be Sith, no matter how much they resist.
You don’t need a fucking time machine, no matter how you change the past,
The outcome is the same – we all “Fade to Black”.
I'm the patient, being treated by Me - the Quack.

I was wondering what happened later in my life that made me forget all about this. Then I recalled - I saw an awesome movie. It was called "Grave of the Fireflies". It made me forget about all my pain! Simply Brilliant - It made me realize that life is about concealing pain and putting that smile on the face - no mater what it takes. It's called Living.

Alchemist - Alternative Ending!

Ubisoft keeps coming up with games that have alternative endings. So why not me?

A very long time ago, I was forced to read the Alchemist [ at gunpoint ]. This probably is the only non sci-fi, non programming book I've ever read in my life. And to be honest - it sucks, big time. What kinda idiot searches the world to find his destiny. Life is about destiny finding you. Google giving you THE search result is destiny - not you typing the url in the browser.

So here's the Alternative Ending:
Dumb Shepard gets tired of his stupid sheep and their constant "Blaaah Blaah"s.
He sells them.
He buys a dog. [even better - stray dog becomes his friend]
He takes it back to his place.
It digs up.
He finds the treasure.
Lives happily ever after. [Fatima who? We all know long distance relationships never work]

NFS: Wind doesn't carry kisses. Its probably the smell of.. never mind.

Risks

I recently read a poem about Risks. Its by Janet Rand. Sheer brilliance. Check it out -

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool,
To weep is to risk being called sentimental.
To reach out to another is to risk involvement.
To expose feelings is to risk showing your true self.
To place your ideas and your dreams before the crowd is to risk being called naive.
To love is to risk not being loved in return,
To live is to risk dying,
To hope is to risk despair,
To try is to risk failure

But risks must be taken, because the greatest risk in life is to risk nothing.
The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing.
He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn, feel, change, grow or love.
Chained by his certitude, he is a slave; he has forfeited his freedom.
Only the person who risks is truly free.

- JANET RAND

Destiny and the Irish Pot of Gold Syndrome

I always believe that nothing can be done to avoid one's destiny. It happens no matter what. There's no way to avoid events from happening in life - no matter how much you try, just like in final destination.

Theorem 1: When destiny wants to kick your ass - All you can do is bend over.

Conclusion 1: You never know whats in store for you. When you bend over - you may actually find a Pot-of-Gold. It's just destiny's way of showing you something good in life.

Corollary 1: When you find a Pot-of-Gold and bend over to pick it up - boy you MAYBE in trouble!

NFS: Stock markets may be a safer bet than investing in gold!
